Salinger – Hartog Letters at UEA
Some of the Salinger – Hartog Letters at UEA

A collection of 50 handwritten letters and 4 postcards has been donated to the University of East Anglia’s Literary Archives by the family of a long-standing friend of the author’s – Mr Donald Hartog. The processing and publicizing of this new collection has raised some interesting data protection and copyright issues as copyright resides with the Salinger Estate. Salinger’s literary agent is unequivocal that consent to any publication of the letters will not be granted, including short quotes or excerpts, and no scanning or photocopying is permitted, requiring journalists and researchers to visit the archives. Thanks to colleagues in GLAM and the National Archives for advice offered.

The University is grateful to the Hartog family for this important donation, and hopes that students and researchers will visit the UEA Archives to read this interesting correspondence, which is remarkable for its very ordinariness. Visits by appointment only.
